Workers' compensation (colloquially known as workers' comp in North American English or compo in Australian English) provides insurance to cover medical care and compensation for employees who are injured in the course of employment, in exchange for mandatory relinquishment of the employee's right to sue their employer .

Compensation, can be defined as the financial compensation paid by one party to another as a result of things like a breach of contract or quantum measure of damages caused. Compensation is usually awarded by the courts but is often hard to enforce when the other party is unable to provide the sum awarded. Breach of duty can also be classed as cause for compensation.

There are various measures used to calculate the value of compensation to be awarded, such as the Direct route whereby direct compensation to the value of assets lost are awarded. The Nominal route where by compensation is paid for harm caused but they are normally more relevant when a party claims alleged violation of things like constitutional rights.
